IBEW Local 1245 members working at the Redding Convention Center could lose their jobs if the City of Redding moves ahead with a plan to close the center.
The Redding City Council will decide on June 21 whether to save or kill the center. Please sign the on-line petition in support of keeping the convention center open.
Information on the importance of the center is given below:
The Redding City Council will be voting on whether or not to shut down the Convention Center in their June 21st Council meeting, so we are asking that SAN members follow the link below and sign the petition prior to June 10, 2011, or ASAP.
The Redding City Council and Staff are trying to find alternative funding to keep the
doors of the Redding Convention Center open. Unfortunately, alternative funding
ideas have been limited and will result in closing the doors of the convention center
to our community.
Think about the impact the loss of this facility and surrounding grounds will have on
our community. The Convention Center has been ground zero for the Annual 4th of
July fireworks celebration, Kids Unlimited, Kool April Nights, Music Concerts, Shasta
Community Concert Association events, Redding Rodeo Events, Business and Job
Fairs, Community Service Programs, Conventions and Trade Shows to name just a
few.
The Redding Convention Center is an important part of the Redding community. It
has been home to many memorable events over the decades, most recently to junior
high and high school graduations.
The Redding Convention Center was built and has been supported by the people and
the business community of Redding for the use and enjoyment of our community.
This facility generates jobs, supports local businesses and noní¢”š¬profits and has a
positive impact on our local economy.
Over time, city leaders have shifted money away from the Convention Center for
other budget priorities. I believe the City has a responsibility and commitment to
keep the convention center open. Closing our community gathering place will result
in furthering the local economic downturn, kill jobs and cancel out community
traditions, events and entertainment that bring so many of us together throughout
the year.
I encourage everyone to take a stand for our community by signing a petition to
keep the convention center open and commit to work together in support of a long
term solution that keeps the Redding Convention Center in the hands of the
community and accessible to all of us.
