BALLOTS AND VOTING
When do the ballots go out?
Ballots will be mailed by May 31, 2022.
When is the deadline to turn ballots in, and when will they be counted?
Completed ballots must be received by the Union at the designated post office box no later than 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 29 at which time counting will begin.
What races will appear on my ballot?
ALL ballots will include: President, Vice President, Recording Secretary, Treasurer, Business Manager/ Financial Secretary, and the Examining Board. Working members will also be balloted for their Executive Board representative, as well as their Advisory Council representative, if this office is contested.
I received a ballot for Executive Board, but I didn’t get one for Advisory Council. Why not?
If the Advisory Council seat that represents your area or work group is uncontested or has no candidates, it will not appear on the ballot. In uncontested races, the single candidate will be declared the winner at the time of the announcement of the election results.
I misplaced my ballot/never received one. How do I request a new ballot?
Email elections@ibew1245.com, or call (707) 452-2779. The Election Judge will then facilitate the physical mailing of a replacement ballot.
Why is my name on the envelope when I return my ballot?
The Election Committee must ensure the integrity of the election while ensuring each member’s voice is heard, which is why every returned ballot must be verified for authenticity. Each secret ballot is separated from its return address long before it is opened. All the envelopes are mixed together, thus making it impossible to connect any ballot to a specific member.
Where can I learn more about the candidates?
Candidate resumes will appear in the Second Quarter edition of the union newspaper.
CANDIDATE ELIGIBILITY
I’ve only been an IBEW 1245 member for one year. Am I eligible to run for union office?
No. The union bylaws require that candidates must be members in good standing for at least two years in order to be eligible to run for union office.
I just bid in to a new classification and I want to run for Advisory Council. Should I run to represent my old workgroup, or my new one?
Candidates must be currently employed within the workgroup they are seeking to represent, and must have at least six months of service in the department, division, or company from which they are nominated.
Can I run for Examining Board as an apprentice?
No. Examining Board candidates must be a Journeyman in the Construction Unit (Outside Line).
Can a retired member run for the Advisory Council?
No, you must be an active employee to represent your department, division, or company.
NOMINATIONS
Can I be nominated even if I know that I cannot attend my unit meeting in person?
Yes. If a member is unable to attend their unit meeting, he or she may notify Local Union Recording Secretary Rachel Ramirez in writing at IBEW 1245, P.O. Box 2547, Vacaville, CA 95687 on or before March 1, 2022, that he or she will run for a specific Local Union office, and can then be nominated at the General Membership Meeting at the Union Hall in March.
I had planned to be nominated at my unit meeting, but I ended up working late and I missed the meeting. Can I still be nominated?
Yes. Please contact the election judge, who will help you find another unit meeting nearby, and will notify the corresponding business rep to expect your nomination at that meeting.
Can nominations occur at a unit meeting if there is no quorum?
Yes, quorum is not required to conduct the nominations process.
Can I nominate myself? Do I need someone to second my nomination?
Yes, members can self-nominate. No second is required.
Am I eligible for more than one elected position?
No member is eligible for more than one office. If nominated for more than one office, the candidate must declare which office he/she wishes to be a candidate. However, positions held in the local Units are not subject to the singular office limit: you may hold an elected position within your Unit and as an Executive Board member, for example.
