Several members of the IBEW 1245 Women’s Committee recently volunteered their time to represent the union at the Ring of Democracy Career and Resource Fair in Sacramento, connecting with job seekers and sharing information about careers in the union workforce.
Throughout the day, committee members answered questions about apprenticeship opportunities, union careers, and the benefits of IBEW membership.
“It was a great way to connect with our community and share our experiences as union women,” said committee member Iyasha Davis. “We had meaningful conversations about career opportunities and what makes the union difference so important.”
The event also created opportunities to connect with other community organizations. Davis met with representatives from Work for Warriors, a nonprofit that helps veterans transition into civilian careers, and shared information with IBEW 1245’s Veterans Committee about future collaboration.
For Cassandra Gamez, the event was an opportunity to help others see a future they may not have considered.
“I’m grateful we had the opportunity to help plant a seed that could lead someone to meaningful employment through union representation,” she said.
Committee member Juana Perez Ochoa said she was proud to represent IBEW 1245.
“When I mention IBEW 1245, people say, ‘Wow,'” she said. “Helping people find a job that can change their lives is amazing.”
Jennifer Boychuk said the event was a rewarding opportunity to answer questions about union careers while connecting with people interested in the skilled trades.
Whether they were answering questions, sharing their own experiences, or encouraging someone to explore a career in the trades, the Women’s Committee members demonstrated what the union difference is all about: members volunteering their time to help others build better futures.
