IBEW 1245 has launched a member-led campaign to secure a fair contract for the workers of the South San Joaquin Irrigation District (SSJID) who provide water to the cities and agricultural areas in and around Escalon, Manteca and Ripon.
These workers provide critical work for SSJID. They are the division managers, maintenance workers, equipment operators, mechanics, water treatment operators, and more that keep the Valley’s water flowing.
But for nine months, management has slow-walked contract negotiations, proposed schedule changes that would reduce employees’ annual compensation, and are asking employees to pay more for benefits. The public deserves to know how the crews who serve them 24/7 are treated— and about management’s delays at the bargaining table.
“Thank you to all of our members who showed up for our SSJID brothers and sisters,” said René Cruz Martinez, IBEW 1245 Assistant Business Manager. “We’re going to keep showing up until a fair agreement is reached.”
“These workers deserve better than delays,” said Sheila Lawton, IBEW 1245 Assistant Business Manager for the Public Sector/Private Sector.“We’re making sure the public understands what’s been happening and why a fair agreement matters for the entire community.”
At the recent Escalon City Council meeting, nearly 25 IBEW 1245 members and supporters packed the Escalon City Council chambers as SSJID management delivered an update on their costly push to take over electric service.
Additionally, signs are appearing throughout the community with a simple, powerful message: Support SSJID Workers!
“This effort is about respect for the people who maintain critical water infrastructure and respond around the clock. When workers are respected and retained, families, farms, and businesses are better served,” said Jessica Stillwell IBEW 1245 Business Representative.
