IBEW 1245 Members and Corrosion Mechanics Gerri Hayes & Eriq “Q” Felder
Oakland, CA –Long time IBEW 1245 member and Corrosion Mechanic Gerri “Poppa Hayes” (PG&E Richmond Service Center) and ten-year 1245 member and Corrosion Mechanic Eriq “Q” Felder (PG&E Oakland Service Center) were traveling West Bound on Fruitvale Avenue up a steep hill in their company vehicle in Oakland, California.
Suddenly, they noticed a runaway baby stroller hurtling down the hill at a high rate of speed, heading into traffic. A grandmother was chasing after it. Fortuitously, the stroller hit a parked car slowing it down a bit, but not before dragging the infant face-first on the asphalt.
Felder, a trained EMT /Firefighter, leapt into action, safely parked their vehicle, immediately called 911 and rushed to check on the toddler and grandmother. The child’s face was covered with lacerations. “I checked the toddler’s airway (to make sure it was not obstructed) & looked at his eyes & the top of his head & ears,” he shared.
Both men consoled & assisted the child’s grandmother. “She was in shock & could barely speak,” said Hayes.
Once Emergency Services arrived, Hayes and Felder informed them about what had happened.
Hayes praised his work partner saying, “I really can’t explain how well Q responded immediately … safely and efficiently in time of need. … Q did an outstanding job.” For his part, Felder returned the compliment, declaring, “I really want give Gerri (Poppa) Hayes his props. It’s not often, if ever, you see a stroller, unmanned, coming down the street. God is good, and I am thankful for everyone that was involved with bringing the situation to a positive outcome.”
Thank you to both of our brothers for quick thinking and outstanding service!
