Sacramento – On April 4th, one of our own, Jack Daniel “JD” Luevano, succumbed to his two-year battle with stomach cancer.
A dedicated husband, father and coworker, JD was a beloved member of IBEW 1245 and the SMUD community where he was a Cable Splicer/Electrician Apprentice (Downtown Network Department) when he was diagnosed. He had previously worked as a High Voltage Electrician Apprentice.
IBEW 1245 Member, Ryan Malmberg, a Journeyman Cable Splicer at SMUD recalled, “JD got hired as a High Voltage Electrician Apprentice. While he was in apprenticeship classes, he discovered what Cable Splicing was about and began pestering our Supervisor relentlessly until he was able to change Apprenticeships. He had to start over as a day 1 apprentice as a Cable Splicer but did so with great enthusiasm.”
Malmberg added, “JD brought a great sense of humor to work and was humble when learning something new. JD was very proud to be a Cable Splicer.”
JD’s enthusiasm was contagious.
“JD loved Chocolate Chip Cookies and inspired the Network Cable Splicers to search all Downtown Sacramento for the best Chocolate Chip Cookies. We had to have a weight loss competition shortly after,” said fellow worker and IBEW 1245 member Matt McMullen, a Journeyman Cable Splicer.
According to his friends and co-workers, while he was passionate about his job and his community, nothing gave JD greater pride and joy than his family: his wife and their five children.
IBEW 1245 member Andrew Davidson, a fellow Apprentice Cable Splicer offered, “I was pumped when I found out JD was joining our department. He was a hard-working bad ass that loved learning the trade. Hearing him talk about his family and how proud he was of his kids was awesome. Every week he had a new story about his kids sports from the weekend. His smile was contagious on the job site and has been missed.”
On behalf of IBEW 1245 we extend our profound sympathy to JD’s family and friends.
