Vacaville – As longtime Vacaville Lead GSR and 26-year IBEW 1245 member Mike Eaves approaches his retirement in February, 2025, he graciously sat down with me to reflect on his career at PG&E, his deep involvement with our Union, and to share advice for the next generation of workers who will carry the torch.
Mike began his PG&E journey in 1998 as a Hiring Hall Meter Reader in San Rafael. A few years later, he moved to Concord, where he had the good fortune of meeting IBEW 1245 Business Rep Darryl Norris. Darryl encouraged Mike to apply for a Gas Service Representative position—a suggestion Mike took to heart. In 2007, he secured a GSR role in Vacaville, marking the beginning of a long and dedicated career in Field Services. Over the years, he has served as a GSR, Service Mechanic, and Lead GSR, ultimately becoming the longest-tenured Field Services employee in Vacaville.
Mike’s Union involvement began when he started attending local Unit Meetings in Vacaville, where he gained insight into union matters and eagerly shared his knowledge with fellow members. His desire to support his IBEW Brothers and Sisters led him to volunteer as a Unit Recorder and later, in 2008, as a Shop Steward.
When asked what advice he has for up-and-coming employees on the Gas side, Mike emphasized the importance of building a strong reputation and supporting coworkers. “The sky is the limit if you get involved. There are many projects and committees to participate in—this job is about more than just running a route every day.” He also highlighted the value of dependability, consistency, and integrity. “You have to take the good with the bad. This is a great job if you keep everything in perspective.” Above all, Mike stressed the importance of safety. “Take one job at a time, don’t rush, focus on the task at hand, and ensure your coworkers are doing the same.”
For young or prospective Shop Stewards, Mike underscored the importance of understanding our contracts and never hesitating to ask for help. “As a Shop Steward, you learn something new every day. Our union has great resources,” he said, mentioning Senior Assistant Business Managers Bryan Carroll and Anthony Brown, as well as retired Business Rep Keith Hopp, as valuable sources of guidance. “It’s reassuring to know that a whole group of working people always has your back and never leaves you hanging.”
Mike expressed gratitude to both the Union and the company for making his retirement process smooth and straightforward. Initially apprehensive, he was pleasantly surprised by how efficiently everything was handled.
So what’s next for Brother Mike Eaves? First, he plans to head back east for a while to take care of some personal matters. Then, he’ll return home to Vacaville to focus on his passion for music. An avid drummer, Mike plays in a couple of local bands, including the Charlie Wade Blues Band, and looks forward to having more time to devote to his craft while also enjoying some well-earned relaxation.
Thank you for everything, Mike. We are all deeply grateful for your years of stewardship, mentorship, and friendship. IBEW 1245 wishes you the best in your future endeavors!
