“Why we do this? To build unity. To build bridges. And to make sure our tree membership knows we appreciate you.” – IBEW 1245 Business Representative Liz McInnis
On Saturday, May 11, 2024, nearly 400 IBEW 1245 members, their families, and staff gathered at the City of Ripon’s Mistlin Sports’ Park for the 2024 Soccer Tournament/Family Day.
”The purpose of today’s tournament is to shine a light on the men and women who climb trees every day, and who do the inspections. We also are pleased that our brothers and sisters from Trayer manufacturing showed up in full force this year. The soccer tournament celebrates diversity and unity,” declared Mark Maumau, IBEW 1245 Assistant Business Manager.
Long time IBEW 1245 Business Representative Junior Ornelas added, “We’re here to acknowledge the hard work our members do.”
In the largest soccer event to date, sixteen teams hailing from ten Line Clearance Tree companies, the CA-NV JATC, and Trayer Manufacturing participated in the 2024 event. Teams were divided into two divisions: the Northern Division and Southern Division.
Under clear blue skies and in 95 degree heat, members took to the fields and played three games each as their families cheered them on.
IBEW 1245 inaugurated the tournament in 2012 with the goal of recognizing our line clearance tree trimmers and building “unity, friendship and the brotherhood.” Business Representatives identified and recruited members to serve as Team Captains to help build their rosters, promote the spirit of the day, and build relationships – member-to-member – across companies.
“This means a lot. I’ve been coming for the last five years, and every year is better. In the Union, we workers are all more like brothers. We have to be,” said Jorge Martinez, the team captain from Davey Tree Watsonville.
Business Representative Ray Banfill shared, “What’s the significance of this event? Camaraderie. Proving that even though we are from different companies, we can all work together, and have fun! It’s also a way the union shows we support our members.”
“For me, the tournament brings us together and builds more unity, more friendship, camaraderie. And the fact that we can bring our families is a big deal!” offered Carlos Telles, the team captain from Arbor Works, Stockton. He added, “The union is very important to us, not just job security but benefits.”
James Young, an electrician from Trayer Manufacturing, shared, “Just to come out and support and enjoy the solidarity is great. The Union has given us security, brotherhood, financial stability. I was a non-union electrician for a long time. It’s good to have the Union as my insurance and steady work.”
Organizing steward lead and DJ Arnaldo Lizarraga kept the mood festive with Salsa, Corridos and rap music throughout the day.
In addition to the soccer games, this year’s event showcased the line clearance tree trimming craft, displaying the tools of the trade. Booths promoting IBEW 1245’s commitment to safety and IBEW 1245 Veterans were also on hand.
The organizing committee expanded the medley of family activities.
Led by Organizing Steward Kayela Johnson, staffer Angela Bekham and veteran volunteer Jose Artiga, dozens of children joined in soccer games and whiffleball. They played Connect Four and enjoyed two piñatas. This year we added Face Painting by Jana and Fun Food by “Little Louie’s Mini Pancakes,” which included fresh baked pancakes topped by ice cream and colorful syrups.
In honor of Mothers’ Day, children distributed more than 125 multi-colored roses to their mothers, aunts and grandmothers.
Staff and organizers served families a delicious spread of tacos, rice, beans, salsa and chips by local Ripon vender, La Taqueria.
Ten participants submitted twelve homemade salsas for the Salsa Cook Off! The top three winners were: Jesus Hernandez, Jesus Garcia and Carlos Castillo.
Hundreds of members and their families participated in the raffle that offered prizes ranging from the national soccer jerseys of the United States, Mexico and El Salvador teams to a Galaxy Tablet and Apple watch.
Twenty-five staff and volunteers (including seven organizing stewards) raised the shade tents, kept the ice chests filled with water and Gatorade for players, served lunch, and cleaned the fields at day’s end.
Business Representative Francisco Ferreyra reflected, “That’s what it’s all about, bringing the family together, uniting everybody together. Not just Trees, but Trayer and the JATC came, and hopefully we can continue to grow that, maybe Outside Line can join us as well, and we can reach our brothers and sisters outside of the tree side.”
As the day came to a close, brother Maumau shared, “I’m so proud of our staff and team. It’s a great day to be a 1245 member!”
