On April 18, 2024, 36 members of IBEW 1245 joined more than 100 IBEW members and staff from IBEW locals across California to make sure Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) installations of 80 KWh+ in California are handled by C-10 contractors – a huge win for our members and signatory contractors.
IBEW 1245’s Organizing Team mobilized 35 of our members, staff and organizing stewards to attend and testify at the California State Licensing Board (CSLB) meeting, capping an eight-year fight to safeguard our work, protect public safety, and advance our climate goals.
We joined Gretchen Newsom, IBEW District 9’s Political Coordinator, and our professional advocates Scott Wetch, Tom Enslow, Bernie Kottier, Chris Smith, Eddie Bernache, among others, to secure this victory. CSLB Board member and retired Business Manager of LU 11 Joel Barton also played a crucial role.
While the proposed rule change had already been approved by the licensing board, the solar companies sought to reverse the previous decision.
This victory was secured with an 8–2 vote count, with two members being excused.
Thanks to all who came out to defend our work and our members. Your presence and participation made all the difference. Because of you, IBEW contractors will secure more work, while ensuring public safety.
–Bob Dean, IBEW 1245 Business Manager
