Sad news: SMUD retiree tragically passed away along with other family member

December 15, 2021

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of a current SMUD employee’s father who was a retired long-time SMUD employee. Manager of Substation Construction and Maintenance Kevin Chelini’s father, David Chelini, recently passed away along with 3 other members of their family in a tragic plane crash. The other family members were Kevin’s 2 sisters, Karen Baker and Donna Chelini, and cousin Stephen Chelini, all who leave behind loving families.

David Chelini began his career at SMUD in 1969 washing cars for the garage and retired as an Electrical Technician in May 2000 after 31 years of service at SMUD.

In sharing this heartbreaking news, Kevin wanted to add a personal message about his father with his colleagues and friends at SMUD.

“ I am humbled by the outpouring of support to our family during this difficult time.  Dad always cherished making new relationships and the ability to share his love of music, flying and automobiles. Most of all, dad loved his family. He taught us that “family” doesn’t stop with our name, it’s a way of life. It’s a culture of love, respect and an opportunity to share it with our community. I know this to be true from the overwhelming response of love and prayers coming from you, our extended family. Dad would be proud. Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts and God bless.” – Kevin

To honor the loss of David and the other Chelini family members, truck booms were raised in the EC-OC yard last Monday.

If you wish to help support the Chelini Family, a Go Fund Me account has been set up to help support the children of Karen, Donna and Stephen.
