Our crumbling physical infrastructure desperately needs investment – just as the American workforce needs access to the good-paying union jobs that will grow our economy and improve living standards.
America is the wealthiest nation in the history of the world, but our infrastructure ranks 13th in the quality of our infrastructure globally.
We can modernize our electric grid, expand access to broadband internet, invest in our transportation sector, including public passenger rail and ports, and rebuild our roads, bridges, and airports. However, it is vital that these investments are used to restore equity in America’s economy by creating good-paying union jobs, a goal that can only be accomplished by pairing priorities with strong labor protections that pay fair wages, provide good benefits and encourage building worker power through organizing.
We have a once-in-a-generation chance to set America on a path to prosperity and prevail in the global economic challenges we currently face.
We encourage members of Congress from both parties to ensure that future taxpayers’ investment in our infrastructure will be built and maintained by highly skilled union workers and not anchored by negotiators bargaining in bad faith. This is the only option available to grow our nation’s middle class and build back better for all Americans.
