Retiree Perspective: Looking Beyond Ideology

August 14, 2020

There may be a lot of us who do not support or would vote for a Democrat in 2020. I had mixed feeling myself in 2016. But we need to look beyond ideology and confront reality. Are we or the country better off over the last four years? For myself as a retiree, I got no benefit from anything this President has done.

Right now, I’m worried about my own medical coverage and social security if Trump is re-elected. Instead of draining the swamp, Trump has given government agencies — the Labor Department, Agriculture, OSHA, EPA, and the Post Office — over to political appointees and corporate tools and lobbyists to run for their own benefit.

If I was working, I’d be worried as well. Although Trump talks that he supports workers and making things in the USA, he still has Chinese trademarks of his own products and actually hasn’t brought that many jobs or industries back to the U.S. The coal industry has lost jobs. Have any of us bought a phone, tv or blue jeans made in USA lately? And there’s no telling what he would do to the gains of unions over the last 100 years.

We have a big choice to make in 2020 as union members. We need to think about our own benefits and also our other brothers and sisters who may not have all our benefits because they aren’t in a union. At least we know Biden would protect the right to be in a union. Simple.
