PG&E Debt to Fire Victims to Be Set Outside of Bankruptcy Court

Two judges will oversee separate court fights that will decide how much the California utility owes wildfire victims, U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Dennis Montali said in court Aug. 27.

  • Montali will continue overseeing PG&E’s Chapter 11 case, but another federal judge will take over the process for estimating how much PG&E must pay for the injuries and deaths caused by wildfires that raged through Northern California in recent years
  • The number will be influenced by a state court overseeing a faster-than-normal process for claims brought by elderly victims of the 2017 Tubbs Fire that killed 22 people
