IBEW 1245 members are preparing to vote on an amendment to the union’s bylaws for the first time in eight years. If approved, the two-part amendment would enact a new union-paid $25,000 accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) policy for Local 1245 members and thier families, as well as increase the current term life benefit from $1,000 to $2,500.
At the July Advisory Council meeting in Reno, IBEW 1245 Business Manager Tom Dalzell noted that this proposed change was prompted by several unit motions and was approved by the Executive Board.
“Our staff spent many hours looking at different insurance options, and we believe this is the best possible choice for our members,” Dalzell told the Advisory Council. “This is not a controversial measure, and we expect overwhelming approval.”
The new AD&D and term life benefits would be entirely union-paid, and there will be no associated dues increase.
The bylaws change will be read and explained at unit meetings in August, and voting will take place by secret ballot at September unit meetings. (For units that meet on alternating months, both the explanation and secret ballot vote will be held in the same meeting, September or August, respectively).
