In response to an invitation by AFL-CIO Secretary Treasurer Elizabeth Shuler, IBEW 1245 sent six young members of IBEW 1245 to participate in the recent AFL-CIO Quadrennial Convention in Los Angeles. The AFL-CIO is the federation representing most of the labor unions in the United States.
Participating in the convention were Business Rep Lloyd Cargo, Organizing Jennifer Gray, and members Georgette Carrillo, a two-year member working at the PG&E Call Center in Fresno; Rosario Garcia, a three-year member working at Trees Inc.; Jammi Juarez, a seven-year member and PG&E Operating Clerk in Sacramento; and Ivan Pereda, a three-year member and Service Rep in Sacramento. IBEW 1245 member Lorenso Arciniega, an 11-year member and PG&E Service Rep in San Jose, participated as a member of the AFL-CIO Young Workers Advisory Council, representing IBEW. Gray participated in the Young Worker Action Session, which focused on how to engage more young people in the labor movement. She shared the success of the IBEW 1245 leadership development program that Business Manager Tom Dalzell has made a priority since 2007.
The IBEW 1245 delegation participated in an action session on inclusion and diversity in the labor movement. It provided an opportunity for delegates to breakout, brainstorm and report out ambitious ideas on how to cultivate and advance the labor movement. The 2013 convention delegates passed ground breaking resolutions on these 10 important initiatives:
- Opening up and broadening the Labor Movement
- Economics for shared prosperity
- A road map to citizenship for aspiring Americans
- Embracing and including the diverse workforce
- Retirement security for all
- A new approach to trade and globalization
- Opposing mass incarceration for profit
- Reclaiming the promise of public education
- Implementing the Affordable Care Act
- State federation, central labor council and affiliate accountability
