On May 31, 2013, IBEW 1245’s Executive Board created a new position – Organizing Stewards –in recognition of the growing number of members actively involved in advancing IBEW 1245 leadership program and to promote our organizing agenda and a culture of volunteer union organizing at IBEW 1245.
Who is an Organizing Steward
Organizing Stewards are IBEW 1245 members who dedicate time and energy to 1245’s organizing activities and campaigns, and who recruit and mobilize others to join them, working closely with our staff team of organizers. Just as in the case of Shop Stewards and Safety Stewards, Organizing Stewards are appointed positions. Formal appointment will be executed by IBEW 1245 Business Manager and President at the recommendation of the organizing staff team in consultation with Business Representatives.
Background
Over the last 4 years, IBEW 1245 has built a strong leadership development program, putting into action Business Manager Tom Dalzell’s vision of expanding our outreach to members — especially young members — and creating opportunities for them to get involved in the life of the union. Today, IBEW 1245 has a core group of 45 active member organizers who have participated in a variety of leadership trainings, political action efforts, campaigns, seminars and workshops. These include the PG&E Clerical Contract fight, the NV Energy Contract Campaign, the No on Prop 32 Campaign, the “No on G” campaign in Fresno, the “Our Walmart” 2013 Summer Campaign, and solidarity with sister locals in Florida, Ohio, and Wisconsin. This group has proven their dedication and ability to the labor movement by taking on leadership roles in past mobilization efforts and by inviting others (their co-workers, families and friends) to participate time and time again.
Considerations:
It is vital to our Union’s future to have a strong foundational power base. In addition to boots on the ground, the role of Organizing Stewards is to promote the values and goals of worker justice and solidarity and to identify, recruit and mobilize others during a variety of activities including contract campaigns, elections, and local community activities. High member participation creates a stronger union, including increased strength and visibility in the workplace and community. Organizing Stewards – like Shop Stewards and Safety Stewards – are the pool from which we draw future leaders of IBEW 1245.
Qualities of Member Organizers:
- A commitment to the ideals of the union and 1245’s organizing agenda
- Team Player who works closely with IBEW 1245’s Organizing Team
- Energy & Enthusiasm
- Desire and commitment to take on an active role within the local on paid time as well as on their own time.
