IBEW Local 1245’s youth development program was honored by the California Labor Federation at its biennial convention in San Francisco July 24-25.
The “Developing Young Workers and Young Leaders Award” was accepted by Jennifer Gray, who is currently coordinating member organizing for Local 1245 on the “No on 32” campaign.
“IBEW 1245 is so very fortunate to have such a supportive Business Manager, Tom Dalzell, who had the vision to integrate youth into all levels of our local,” said Gray in accepting the award. “We encourage everyone in this room to continue to identify, recruit, and mentor young workers into this great labor movement.”
Sharing the stage with Gray were many of the Local 1245 members who participated in political campaigns in Florida, Ohio and Wisconsin to defend workers’ rights. Gray thanked these members for their hard work in the past, but immediately put the focus on the future, saying: “We look forward to defeating Prop 32 come this November!”
Delegates to the convention worked on strategies for defeating Prop 32, and also voted on endorsements for legislative, congressional and statewide offices as well as other ballot measures.”
The convention also featured a Labor Awards Dinner with an address given by Gov. Jerry Brown. Also in attendance was US Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis, who was honored with the distinguished “Solidarity Award.”
