Duties

Help

Protection and Communication Craftsmen perform the following: Maintain, repair, modify, program, install and commission power system substation protection control, monitoring and metering equipment. Maintain, repair, install, program, and test polyphase revenue metering equipment, including electronic and microprocessor based kilowatt hour meters, digital demand recorders, and instrument transformers. Maintain, repair, install, program, and test control equipment used in controlling substation equipment.

Personal maximum weight may not exceed 280 pounds at time of appointment.  Personal weight will be determined at the time of physical examination and final job offer will be contingent upon verification that individual’s weight does not exceed this amount.

Qualifications

You must have journeyman-level ability in the duties of an Protection and Communication Craftsman. You must meet all the qualification and eligibility requirements for the position by the closing date of the announcement.

  • You will be required to possess a pair of fully-encased safety-toed footwear meeting the standard ASTM F 2413-05 upon reporting to work.
  • The incumbent is required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • The incumbent must wear Arc Rated protective clothing when in proximity to exposed energized circuits.
  • This position may require regular and recurring overtime. Overtime may be required on short notice to include nights, holidays and weekends in support of related mission requirements.
  • On-call (Rotational) - The duties of this position may require the incumbent to be placed in a 24/7 on-call status on a rotational basis. On-call status on a rotational basis is anticipated to be approximately 25-35% of the year.
  • This position requires the ability to operate a Government vehicle. The incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain Defensive Drivers certification and have a valid state driver’s license. Defensive Driver’s Training will be completed upon employment.
  • This position requires the incumbent to climb transmission structures averaging 65 feet but up to 500 feet on occasion, and communication towers up to 400 feet.
  • This position requires a climbing weight (personal weight without gear) not to exceed 280 pounds.
  • Overnight travel of 5-7 days per month on average may be required.
  • The selectee for this position may be eligible to receive a recruitment or relocation incentive.  You will need to sign an employment agreement to be eligible for this incentive.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.
